Chapel of St. Catherine , Old Goa.


Chapel of St.Catherine is situated in Old Goa , Goa.

This Chapel is built of laterite blocks and it has tower on either side of the facade. It was rebuilt in 1952 on the remains of an earlier structure.

The interior of the chapel is plain with only one altar.

Afonso de Albuquerque built this chapel in 1510 to commemorate his entry into the city on St.Catherine's Day.

This chapel was enlarged in 1550 by Governor George Cabral who put a inscribed slab which says " Here in this place was the doorway through which Governor Afonso de Albuquerque entered and took this city from Mohammadans on the day of St.Catherine in the year 1510 in whose honour and memory the Governor , George Cabral ordered to built this chapel in year 1550 at the expenses of His Highness " .
