Se Cathedral , Old Goa

Se Cathedral ,  a 16th century monument is one of the largest church in Asia. It is Situated in Old Goa , Goa.

The Cathedral is dedicated to St. Catherine of Alexandria on whose feast day in 1510 Alfonso Albuquerque defeated the Muslim army and took possession of the city of Goa. Hence it is also known as St. Catherine's Cathedral.

This church has a Main altar, 9 chapels and 4 more altars.

The Main Altar is dedicated to St. Catherine of Alexandria.

The construction of the church began in 1562 and got completed by 1619. And that of altars was completed in the year 1652. The church was consecrated in 1640.

The church is built in Portuguese-Gothic  style with Tuscan exterior and Corinthian interior. The church  is 76.2m long and  55.17m wide. And its height at the façade is 35.05m.

There were two towers on each side of façade of which one collapsed in 1776.

The bell in the existing tower is often referred as the “Golden Bell” because of its rich sound.
